Tips for Selecting the Right White Paint Color and How to Use Them

With all the white paint colors out there, we do have some of our tried and true favorites that we start with as a baseline when meeting with our clients. Here are our top 5 favorite white paint colors.

In the world of interior design, few decisions are as seemingly simple yet surprisingly complex as choosing the right white paint color. While white may appear to be a straightforward choice, the reality is that there exists a vast array of whites, each with its own unique undertones, nuances, and effects on a space. As an interior design firm, we understand the importance of selecting the perfect white paint color to enhance the beauty and atmosphere of your living or working space. In this blog post, we delve into the intricacies of white paint selection, offering insights and tips to help you make an informed decision.

Understanding the Diversity of White

Contrary to popular belief, not all white paints are the same. In fact, the spectrum of white paint colors is incredibly diverse, ranging from warm, creamy tones to cool, crisp shades. Understanding the underlying undertones of white paint is essential for achieving the desired aesthetic in your space.

Warm Whites: Warm white paints often contain subtle hints of yellow, red, or brown undertones, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. These shades pair beautifully with traditional or rustic interior styles, adding a sense of warmth and character to any room.

Cool Whites: On the other end of the spectrum, cool white paints feature undertones of blue, green, or gray, imparting a clean and contemporary feel to a space. These shades are ideal for modern or minimalist interiors, offering a refreshing and serene backdrop for your décor.

Neutral Whites: Situated between warm and cool tones, neutral white paints strike a perfect balance, making them incredibly versatile and adaptable to various design styles. These shades are excellent for creating a timeless and harmonious ambiance, allowing your furnishings and accessories to take center stage.

Tips for Selecting the Right White Paint Color

  1. Consider Natural Light: The amount of natural light in your space can significantly influence how white paint appears. Rooms with ample sunlight may benefit from cooler white tones to prevent the space from feeling too harsh, while rooms with limited natural light may benefit from warmer whites to add warmth and depth.

  2. Test Paint Samples: Before committing to a white paint color, it's essential to test samples in your space under different lighting conditions. Paint swatches directly onto your walls and observe how the color changes throughout the day, from morning light to evening shadows.

  3. Complement Your Décor: Take into account the existing furnishings, fabrics, and finishes in your space when selecting a white paint color. Choose a shade that harmonizes with your décor elements, whether it's enhancing the warmth of wooden furniture or accentuating the sleekness of metal accents.

  4. Consult with Professionals: When in doubt, seek guidance from experienced interior designers or paint experts who can offer personalized recommendations based on your specific needs and preferences. They can help navigate the myriad options available and steer you towards the perfect white paint color for your project.

The Art of Dining: A Tablescape Inspired by the Art of Christina Haglid

Swaying with the ocean’s breath, illuminated orbs dance over translucent waves. Nighttime flowers blossom under moonlight. Peace washes over as glimmering stars brighten the endless midnight sky. Inspired by Christina Haglid’s ethereal artwork, Sarah Jacquelyn Interiors sets the space between light and dark.

Our team had the honor of participating in ASID Illinois inaugural Art of Dining event this year!

12 talented interior designers created beautiful tablescapes that were inspired by the art of: René Romero Schuler, Christina Haglid, Steve Turner, Mark Bowers & Jeff Conroy. The event was hosted at Gallery Victor Armendariz and Zola Lieberman Gallery in River North.

Sarah Jacquelyn Interiors was inspired by Christina Haglid’s ethereal artwork.

The fragility of the environment has always played an important role in Christina Haglid's work. As a child growing up on the East Coast, the ever changing seaside landscapes intrigued her. This fragile balance between nature and her subject matter is as delicate as a paper lantern floating on the ocean.

The Ocean, Christina Haglid 2019 - 2020, acrylic on panel, 8h x 10w inches

Christina Haglid’s history with writing poetry has shaped the narrative process in her artwork. She views objects in the painting like words placed on a page. Haglid creates her paintings with watercolor and gouache on paper or acrylic on panel. She composes flowers, manipulated objects, and architecture together in compositions to symbolize the subtle conversations and interactions between them. Her imagery is placed in imaginary landscapes that are inspired by actual places seen throughout her travels.

Each tablescape highlighted a color from Sherwin Williams, one of the event sponsors. Our vignette incorporated the beautiful color: Smokey Blue

Smoky Blue by Sherwin Williams

Petunia in Space, Christina Haglid, 2018, watercolor and gouache on paper, 5.25h x 5w inches

At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature.
— Christina Haglid

Paper Boat, Christina Haglid, 2019 - 2020, acrylic on panel, 8h x 10w inches

Monolith No. 4, Sarah Haglid, 2020, watercolor and gouache on paper, 8h x 9w inches

Daybreak, Christina Haglid, 2015-2018, watercolor and gouache on paper, 7.88h x 14.50w inches

What inspired us:

  • mysterious and spiritual quality

  • movement vs. calm nature of water

  • layers of ocean moving at night

  • juxtaposition of light and dark

  • floating quality of the orbs, glowing flowers

  • glowing effect of organic objects

  • story of the object and its environment

We used color and a 3D fabric texture to evoke the feeling of the ocean at night. Generous florals adorn a feminine bust with a mysterious gaze. Droplets of gold accents float over the blue tablecloth, emulating the ocean. Glowing orbs dance over waves of fabric on each end of the table setting.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support us and a special thank you to all that made this tablescape possible. We couldn’t have done this without you!

How to Design Your Living Room

Expert advice on how to design your living room.

1. First things first…paint last! It may seem counterintuitive, but with so many nuanced options, you'll want to get it just right. We used Benjamin Moore’s luscious ‘Galapagos Green’ in an ultra flat finish for the ceiling in our latest living room makeover. Be patient, and be bold!

2. Find your focal point. Every room has a natural center point, whether it's the fireplace, TV, or picture window with an expansive view. Plan furniture around this center line. Sometimes a room can have two focal points, like a TV wall and a fireplace. This is trickier, but with the right sectional, anything is possible. Art is one of my favorite focal points. A good frame makes the piece. Artists Frame Service is our favorite local framer. Art helps set the mood in the space, balances the weight of the room, adds color + texture, and creates a conversation starter.

Pro Tip: I love vacation art. These are special pieces picked up on your travels that bring you back to that time and place. Also, buy art done by family members, local artist’s pieces that speak to you, or try framing your own artwork!

3. Select functional furniture. Opt for tight over loose cushions. You'll save yourself the trouble of constantly cleaning between the seats. Multifunctional furniture is great! Pull up ottomans on casters and add instant seating. Bonus if they cant be tucked away under a coffee table or console. Make sure there’s ample surfaces to live and function. Consider a console behind your sofa, end tables for a wine glass, or a coffee table 18-20" from the sofa edge.

4. Think about function & address traffic flow. Do you host super bowl parties and need seating for 8-10? Maybe the kids need it to be cozy, while you need it to be easy to clean. Perhaps it's just you, your partner, and your dog relaxing after a long day of work. Knowing how you will use the space will determine the direction of the design.

To find a flow, think about how you and your guests are entering and exiting this room. Are two points of entry needed? Does that point of entry cross the path of the TV? Can that be avoided?

Our Team: Violeta, Bianka, and Sarah (from Left to right)

5. Layer your lighting. Think ceiling lights, table lamps, floor lamps, and windows. Balance the light in the space. Make sure your lighting is on dimmers to adjust it has a day turns to night.

6. Bring in color.  Start with the rug. Use the colors of the rug to influence the palette for the rest of the room. Your rug should be large enough that the front two feet of the sofa sit on it comfortably.

7. Choose fabrics for your lifestyle.  Busy living calls for stain treated or bleach cleanable fabrics depending on your needs (and how rowdy your guests get!) Cozy up with the final layer of pillows. Add in pattern, texture, and trim here. Have fun with it! These can be changed out seasonally or as you want to update your decor!

It’s Time to Paint Your Front Door

Your front door is the first thing your guests see when they approach your home. It should prepare them for the beautiful interior that waits inside.

Updating the front of your home doesn’t need to break the bank. Sometimes a little paint, new door hardware, and some new lighting is all you need!

Your front door is the first thing your guests see when they approach your home. It should prepare them for the beautiful interior that waits inside.

Updating the front of your home doesn’t have to break the bank. Sometimes a little paint, new door hardware, and some new lighting is all you need!

The Design Challenge

Our client was looking to spruce up her front door entryway. The hardware finish was degraded, the paint was tired, and the lighting didn’t coordinate with the rest of her beautiful interior. We were challenged to update this front door with some new hardware, paint, and sconce lighting.

The Design Process

We started by taking influence from the stained glass motif. The square nature of the design influenced us to select square hardware and lighting. We went with a pewter metal finish for the hardware, as it coordinated with the metal in the stained glass. Matte black square lanterns completed the look.

Selecting a Paint Color

When selecting the front door paint color, we thought about the context of the whole home. The palette was rich and vibrant aqua and teal tones that balanced well with the neutrals. We used a lot of angled geometry, which also nicely tied in the rectangular design of the new door hardware and sconce lighting.

Benjamin Moore Aegean Teal

We finally landed on Benjamin Moore’s 2021 Color of The Year - Agean Teal as the paint color. It’s a beautiful blend of blue-green and gray. It’s an intriguing midtone that creates natural harmony; a balanced and soothing color that allows you to reflect and reset. It goes great with browns, taupe, chartreuse, and whites.

This welcoming color was perfect for the client’s front door.

our top 5 favorite white paint colors and how to use them

With all the white paint colors out there, we do have some of our tried and true favorites that we start with as a baseline when meeting with our clients. Here are our top 5 favorite white paint colors.

People often ask us “What’s the perfect white paint color?” This is a difficult question to answer, because it really depends on your space, surrounding elements, lighting, and the design goals you are trying to achieve. Paint color should be the LAST element you select in your design. There are thousands of paint color options out there, and they vary by hue (color), value (lightness to darkness by adding black or white), and intensity (brightness or dullness by adding the complement color). Whites are particularly tricky because they often have undertones of blue, green, yellow, and red that can affect the look of your space.

Picking the perfect paint color takes a trained eye to understand all of the elements in the space and how they work together harmoniously. So I like to rephrase this question to:“ What is the perfect white paint color for your space?”

Interior Design and COVID-19

COVID-19 has impacted us all in different ways. We are learning new ways to cope, connect, and move towards a new normal. Through all of these changes and isolation, we have learned just how important it is to have social support from our friends, families, and colleagues. One of the big questions we face as interior designers is “How will the architecture and design community be impacted by COVID-19?”

COVID-19 has impacted us all in different ways. From tragic loss of lives, to lay-offs and business closures, the strain on our emotional, physical and mental health has been incredibly difficult for each of us in our own way. We are learning new ways to cope, connect, and move forward towards a new normal. Through all of these changes and isolation, we have learned just how important it is to have social support from our friends, families, and colleagues. We’re all missing human bonding.

Our lack of in person contact can trigger what Vivek Murthy, a physician and former surgeon general of the US calls a social recession - “social isolation that has a negative impact on physical and mental well-being of people and can even put us at risk for premature death.” There is reach that links social isolation and loneliness to poor health outcomes such as heart disease, dementia, sleep loss, depression and reduced life expectancy.

To help prevent isolation and a social recession, we need to ensure we are connecting with people outside our home for at least 15 minutes a day. Whether that be a phone call, video chat, or safe distance visit. It’s also important that we take time to help other people, be more conscious of others, and see the bigger picture of how we fit into our community. There are many beneficial health and wellness outcomes associated with acts of generosity, charity, and community bonding. A main one being increasing our sense of belonging and decreasing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Office Spaces

istockphoto-1220174622-170667a.jpg

One of the big questions we face as interior designers is “How will the architecture and design community be impacted by COVID-19?” This is a loaded question, but ultimately, I believe this situation has given the design community the opportunity to be creative in new ways.

As we begin to reopen and return to offices at reduced capacity, new protocols are being implemented, as we disinfect our desks, chairs, keyboards, mouses, and phones daily. Our perspective and safety views on the office environment has changed, as we have all adapted a heightened sensitivity to touch and awareness of social distance. Even with new cleaning policies, there are still challenges with our current office layouts, conference room sizes, elevator capacity, distancing capabilities, and privacy that need to be addressed.

This is where designers and architects come in. We design spaces for people, and the way we design these spaces is going to change.“We’re coming to realize that as designers, architects, and building managers, we have a critical role to play in public health.” (Rachel Gutter, President of IWBI). We will be designing safer work spaces, with social distancing protocols, re-imagined office layouts, specifying materials that are easily cleanable and implementing maintenance schedules. The effects of COVID-19 will impact the way we think about and design spaces of the future.

Work From Home Life

This world wide social experiment of “Can we all really work remotely?” has sparked conversations among many companies on if they even need to return to a physical office. Companies like Google, Twitter and Facebook have embraced the option of the remote work lifestyle permanently. This opens the opportunity for people anywhere in the world to work for these companies since you don’t need to be present at a physical office everyday. Businesses have learned to adapt to the work from home life, and some are even working more efficiently than they did in the actual office. Benefits of remote work are:

Less Time Spent Commuting

Improved Employee Retention

More Independent Employees

Reduced Operating Costs

Diverse Candidates

Efficient Use of Technology

Increased Productivity

Positive Environmental Impacts

architecture-business-clean-computer-389818.jpg

Better Work Life Balance

Healthier Employees

Less Stressed Employees

Financial Savings

Customized Home Office

Healthier Employees

Improved Creativity

More Time with Family

Many businesses are seeing these great benefits and investing more in their work from home employee support. A company's ability to do this depends on it’s type of work, flexibility, culture, access to technology and the ergonomics of the employees home. Even after the pandemic, work from home choices will be more of an option than ever before. Studies show that employees with the highest level of satisfaction are those who have options of where, how and when they work.

Residential Interior Design and Wellness

With more people working from home, this will change the way we design residences, specifically by creating a designated office space. Things to consider are layout, placement in the home, acoustical privacy, storage, supplies, sustainable components, ergonomics, clean-ability, healthy building materials, and incorporating strategies to avoid burn out. Creating a new lifestyle where home and work life co-exist in the same space. We’re seeing a major need for these newly developed, creative and healthy spaces in the home.

With a progression towards health and wellness in all facets of our life, and a desire for a cleaner and safer environment due to COVID-19, the Design and Architecture industry is taking great strides to incorporate human health into our environments. WELL Certification is about placing people at the heart of design and enhancing the human health and well being experience. It’s a certification process for buildings, backed by evidence based health and scientific research with leading physicians, scientists and industry professionals.

Over the last few months, I have seen the positive value that the WELL Certification can bring to me as a designer and to my clients. I am working towards earning my WELL AP certification to be able provide health and wellness education and support in our interior design projects. “A WELL AP denotes expertise in the WELL Building Standard and a commitment to advancing human health and wellness in buildings and communities around the world.” (wellcertified.com)

The WELL certification provides me with a unique understanding of how the human body is impacted by our indoor and outdoor environments, and how to create a healthier home for my clients. From contaminants in our water and air, lighting consideration and temperature controls, to healthy eating and fitness, WELL Certification covers all this and more to ensure buildings and their occupants health and wellness take priority, increasing the quality and longevity of our lives.

Styling Essentials for a Modern Dressing Table

It’s important to dress your dressing table just as you would any other surface. A tray is the perfect place to keep your makeup brushes, lotions, and other catch-alls. Having a small box or dish to store loose jewelry and trinkets is a smart option. Don’t forget to add some color with a vase full of luscious flowers! Here are some beautiful and functional accessories we’re crushing on right now.

Hanging Chairs: Make a Statement

Hanging chairs are trending in the design world once again! These retro-chic chairs will bring out your inner child and have everyone fighting for the best seat in the house.

Hanging chairs are trending in the design world once again! These retro-chic chairs will bring out your inner child and have everyone fighting for the best seat in the house. The original hanging chair, or “bubble chair”, was designed by Finnish Interior Designer, Eero Aarnio, in 1968. Constructed of acrylic and stainless steel with a leather cushion inside, the bubble chair gave the appearance of floating freely and simply, while creating “a little cocoon that shields off the outside world.” (aarniooriginals.com) Over the years, the bubble chair has evolved into variations of the original design, with an array of different materials, textures, colors and shapes.

“I had the idea of a transparent ball, where light comes from all directions. Acrylic can be heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble, and I knew that domeshaped skylights were made that way...” -Eero Aarnio

Fun and whimsical, hanging chairs give a light and airy feeling to the room, yet can be a practical solution since they don’t have legs. They carry a sense of peace and comfort while making a creative statement. Create a haven of relaxation while adding a unique twist to your home’s design. Hanging benches are the perfect place to drift into a peaceful nap or to share a quiet moment with a loved one. Recently, Architectural Digest featured Kylie Jenner’s living room, designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard, which showcases a luxurious floating bench.

Don’t be afraid to hang your chair from the ceiling with the help of a professional. They will ensure that your chair is hung on a load bearing joist, that the proper hardware is installed to safely bear weight (600lbs is usually a good start), and that you have enough space around the chair to swing back and forth safely. If you’re limited on modifications to your home, a more versatile option for an eye-catching hanging chair is one that is suspended from a free-standing mount. These indoor/outdoor chairs make great options for the perfect place to curl up!

The intricate detailing of these hanging chairs adds an element of luxury to a space while still creating an inviting atmosphere of comfort. Cozy up in a simple hanging chair with colorful pillows and soft throw for an appealing seating option.

With endless options for style and comfort, a hanging chair may just be the thing that your space is missing. Bring creativity and fun into your home and don’t forget to invite your friends to come “hang out”!

Every year, Sherwin-Williams releases a Colormix Forecast. They take “color of the year” above and beyond, with 6 distinct color palettes that have personality and emotion. I was able to get a sneak preview of these unique combinations last fall and I’m so excited to share them on my blog today. After reading about each of them, let me know which palette you feel most connected to!

Click below to watch the inspiration video:

SHAPESHIFTER

“There are those who always seem a little ahead of their time. Visionary and creative, this palette reaches into the cosmos and returns with a whole universe of inspiration. Atmospheric wisps of colors, grounded by deep, dark blues, capture the unique space between technology and spirituality.” (swcolorforecast.com)

RINGS OF SATURN | ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE | SPIRITUALISM | HEALING ENERGY

header-shapeshifter.png

Shapeshifter is all about cool wood tones, iridescent finishes, metals and crystals.

WANDERER

“Some spirits can never be fenced in. They need to soak in the blue of endless horizon and the subtle earthy colors of the high plains and desert. Sun-washed and warm, this palette can be seen in the baked clay canyons, worn leather and woven wool blankets of the true New West.” (swcolorforecast.com)

CAREFREE BOHEMIAN | MODERN COWGIRL | UNBRIDLED ADVENTURE | SOUTHWESTERN TWIST

header-wanderer.png

Picture warm wool blankets, rustic warm wood tones, camel colored leathers. Think lots of natural materials, and sustainable living, the modern farm house. This palette moves away from the high gloss finishes and metallics.

AFICIONADO

“Devotees of the best in life appreciate the well-worn, the bespoke and the rare. Like a bookcase of leather-bound classics, this polished palette evokes nostalgia and timeless tradition. With copper and gold anchored by merlot and deep, dark gray, these tailored tones make everything feel impeccable, tasteful and elegant.” (swcolorforecast.com)

READING NOOKS | BRITISH ACCENTS | TWEEDY MENSWEAR |'60S NOSTALGIA

Aficionado is all about mixing and matching styles and eras. Think warm modernism that is comfortable, yet contemporary. The epitome of the bibliophile.

hero-aficionado.jpg

ENTHUSIAST

“There are those who don’t know the meaning of “less is more.” Passionate and eclectic, they have a calling to be unique. They embrace the details and create scene-stealing worlds that burst with beauty. The proof is in this palette that features bold pops of vivid color, maximum impact and lots of energy.” (swcolorforecast.com)

MAXIMALISM | COZY CHAOS | OVER-THE-TOP OPULENCE | MORE IS MORE

Maximalism is on its’ way back! Think confident, bright colors that celebrate personality and self expression. Layered collages, mixed patterns and textures, and unique wood finishes set this palette apart.

hero-enthusiast.jpg

NATURALIST

“Walking barefoot in the garden, nature lovers instantly connect with the wonder of the world in full bloom. With roots in the forest, this palette’s colorful tendrils grew in hothouses and conservatories until they became these lush, sophisticated tones. Ranging from mushroom to leafy green to passionate floral pink, they’ve now found a place where they’ll never fade.” (swcolorforecast.com)

FOREST MUSHROOMS | BOTANICAL PRINTS | BUTTERFLY COLLECTIONS | TERRARIUMS

Capture3.JPG

Botanicals, terrariums, and intricate details, Naturalist is about bringing the outside in. Characterized by worn wood textures and layered plants, this palette is whimsical, yet crisp.

hero-naturalist.jpg

RACONTEUR

“From ancient sagas to today’s motivational speakers, we love our storytellers. With colorful accounts they sum up our very nature and remind us how we’re all connected. Passed from grandmothers, traders and nomads, the tales traveled the world, gaining artistry, until we’ve translated them into a rich and modern palette that spans space and time.” (swcolorforecast.com)

DESERT OASES | GLOBAL STYLE | LUXURY SAFARIS | SPICE MARKETS

Capture5.JPG

Raconteur means story teller. Characterized by global influences and natural materials, this palette captures our attention and connects us through a design story.
